                                        ABOUT EL CAJAS

El Cajas is one of the most unique environments  in the world and for that reason the Cajas National Park was just recently added to the list of protected biospheres by the Unesco. This natural reserve is located about an hour away from the city of Cuenca and covers 285 km2.

The weather in Cajas is as ever changing as the spectacular views. Experiencing all four seasons so to say in one day is quite common.  You could be fishing in the clouds one hour and shedding your clothes the next. Battling the winds during your casts followed by periods of still, glassy calm waters where every twitch of a floating insect can be seen. Heavy rains are not that common but the rolling mists and drizzles are

during the colder months and do come and go through out the day.

The warmer months of Nov, Dec, Jan and Feb can be nothing short of perfect fishing conditions.

Fly Fishing Guide Service in Cajas, Cuenca

Safety Precautions:   The average altitude in Cajas is around 12,000 ft (4,000 meters)  Cajas is know for it's low laying, fast moving cloud cover. Many hikers do get disoriented through out the year during these conditions. The terrain can be steep with high grass and many cliffs. Temperatures can drop below freezing at night and the winds can get up to 40 mph. There is very little (if any) cell phone service in Cajas. It is always recommended that the services of a guide be obtained for all lengthy outings.

FYI:  The weather forecasts are rarely spot on accurate.  To quote Mark Twain, "Climate is what we plan for, weather is what we get."
